ActionAid Vanuatu is a women-led organisation working with communities across Vanuatu to strengthen climate resilience, disaster preparedness, gender justice and livelihoods. Its work centres local leadership, particularly through the Women I Tok Tok Tugeta network, supporting women to shape decisions, lead community responses and build stronger, more resilient communities.
This Groundswell grant supported ActionAid and the Shifting the Power Coalition to strengthen Pacific women’s leadership in climate action and push for a faster phase-out of fossil fuels. The funding helped elevate Pacific women’s voices through media, community organising, digital mobilisation and direct engagement with Australian decision-makers, while building support for greater climate finance and women-led climate solutions. The work also aimed to mobilise tens of thousands of Australians and ensure Pacific women’s priorities are heard in the lead-up to COP31.
This grant supported ActionAid Vanuatu to lay the foundations for a women-led marine protection program through the Women I Tok Tok Tugeta network. The project identified local women to lead implementation, established a governance team, secured support from the Ministry of Fisheries and trained women in community-based protection, while strengthening peer learning across islands. After the December 2024 earthquake, the network also pivoted to urgent relief, demonstrating the strength of women-led organising in responding to climate, disaster and community needs.
