Teppethiggi Ni-Ripono, in partnership with the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (CAFNEC), is working to prevent fossil fuel extraction, protect Country and support climate action through collaboration with Traditional Owners and community groups. CAFNEC is a regional leader in environmental advocacy, creating opportunities for connection, strategy and collective action across Far North Queensland.
This Groundswell grant supported the Cairns and Far North Queensland Environment Centre to strengthen community-led climate and nature advocacy across the region. The funding helped grow and support local members and groups, build community power around strategic environmental issues, and push government and industry decision-makers to act on climate mitigation, adaptation and nature protection. The work also supported collaboration alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples caring for land and sea Country.
This grant supported Teppethiggi Ni-Ripono and CAFNEC to bring Traditional Owners, community groups and environmental organisations together to strengthen collaboration around protecting Country and resisting fossil fuel development. The funding helped deliver the Far North Queensland Environment Roundtable and the Puti’ Ki Ni’Ripono On Country Meeting, creating space for cultural exchange, shared strategy and relationship-building across Western Cape York and Northern Australia. The work strengthened regional networks, elevated Traditional Owner leadership and helped communities coordinate more effectively on climate and environmental advocacy.

Wherever we are in this country, we are on Country.
We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Traditional Custodians, and pay our respects to Elders past and present.
We honour their enduring care for Country and the First Nations leadership our climate future depends on.
