A new Elder-led movement tackling the climate crisis in the Torres Strait. With Groundswell's support, they'll pilot a coordinator on Saibai Island to drive strategic planning and resilience projects, with First Nations leadership and climate justice guiding the path forward.
This grant supported the establishment of Climate Collective Zenadth Kes, a grassroots, Elder-led movement responding to the escalating climate impacts facing the Torres Strait. The funding helped build the foundations for community-led adaptation on Saibai Island, including local coordination, consultation with Elders, a climate needs analysis and a long-term resilience strategy grounded in Ailan Kastom, Lore and Law. The work also supports climate education, wellbeing, language preservation, youth leadership and national and international advocacy, creating a model for self-determined, culturally grounded climate adaptation across Zenadth Kes.
