ECNT is the Environment Centre Northern Territory, an independent environmental organisation based in the Northern Territory. It works on issues including climate change, fossil fuel development, water protection, biodiversity and environmental law and policy, combining community organising, campaigning, research and advocacy.
This Groundswell grant supported Environment Centre NT to strengthen the campaign to stop fracking in the Beetaloo Basin and protect the Northern Territory’s water, communities and climate. The funding helped deliver targeted digital campaigning in the NT and key federal electorates, building public awareness, mobilising supporters and increasing pressure on decision-makers. The campaign centres the risks fracking poses to groundwater and waterways, while connecting grassroots organising, media and advocacy into a coordinated national push for long-term protection.
This Groundswell grant supported the Environment Centre Northern Territory (ECNT) to strengthen First Nations-led opposition to the Barossa gas project. The funding helped ensure Munupi clan representative and community campaigner Antonia Burke could be paid for her time to organise, build campaigning capacity and support Tiwi Traditional Owners through critical project approval and consultation processes. The work helped sustain community leadership at a pivotal stage of the campaign and ensure decisions affecting Tiwi Country were challenged by people with deep cultural authority and local trust.

ECNT uncovered explosive FOI documents showing Santos’ Darwin LNG hub has leaked huge amounts of methane since 2006 and that regulators knew and failed to act. The revelations have put regulatory failure in the spotlight and increased pressure on government to fix a major source of methane pollution.
