Environment Victoria is an independent, not-for-profit environmental organisation that has been campaigning on environmental and climate issues in Victoria since 1969. Its work spans climate and energy policy, coal and gas phase-out, clean energy, environmental protection and community organising. It combines public campaigning, policy advocacy, legal action and grassroots organising to influence government and industry decisions.
This Groundswell grant supported Environment Victoria to challenge weak regulation of pollution from Victoria’s coal-fired power stations and build momentum for a faster, fairer transition away from coal. The funding helped cover legal action against the EPA and power station operators, alongside campaign and communications work that brought the health and climate impacts of coal into the public debate. While the court case was unsuccessful, it generated significant media attention, increased scrutiny of regulators and power companies, and contributed to broader pressure for earlier coal closure dates and a stronger transition plan for the Latrobe Valley.
