As Australia’s only public interest environmental law organisation with a dedicated Pasifika lawyer-led program, EDO is using the law as a powerful tool for climate justice across the Pacific
This grant supported Environmental Defenders Office’s Pasifika Program to continue advancing Pacific-led climate justice through law and policy. The program provided legal support across the region, including work on climate displacement, statehood and maritime rights in Tuvalu, as well as international advocacy linking fossil fuel production with human rights obligations. The work helped ensure Pacific communities and governments were better represented in the legal decisions shaping their future.
This grant supported Environmental Defenders Office’s Pasifika Program to deepen its work with communities experiencing climate displacement and environmental loss. In Papua New Guinea’s Kikori Delta, the program helped Veraibari Village document its experiences, engage with international human rights processes and begin community-led relocation planning. The work combined legal support, climate education and advocacy to strengthen community decision-making and self-determination.
This grant supported Environmental Defenders Office’s Pasifika Program to strengthen legal advocacy for communities on the frontlines of climate change. The work helped build the legal foundations linking climate impacts, human rights and fossil fuel regulation, while supporting Pacific communities to better understand and assert their rights. It also contributed to international advocacy on loss and damage and the emerging legal frameworks shaping climate justice across the region.
This grant supported Environmental Defenders Office’s Safe Climate Team to develop and run strategic legal cases challenging new and expanding fossil fuel projects across Australia and the Pacific. The funding contributed to legal staff working on major climate cases, including challenges involving New Acland, Bylong, Ashton Coal and the Santos Barossa Gas Project, while also supporting communications that significantly expanded the reach of EDO’s work. The grant helped strengthen the use of public interest law to protect communities, Country and climate, including a landmark win requiring Santos to properly consult Tiwi Traditional Owners.
