Environmental Justice Australia is a public interest legal organisation that uses the law to protect nature, communities and the climate. Its lawyers work with people and community groups to challenge harmful projects, hold governments and companies to account, and push for stronger environmental laws and policy. The organisation combines litigation, legal advocacy and community partnerships, with a focus on issues where legal action can help drive broader systemic change.
This Groundswell grant supported Environmental Justice Australia to use strategic legal action to challenge fossil fuel expansion and strengthen how Australian law responds to climate harm. The funding helped advance major cases including the Living Wonders intervention, which pushed the federal Environment Minister to reconsider the climate impacts of 18 proposed coal and gas projects. The work also supported litigation, advocacy and partnerships with affected communities, helping build stronger legal tools for holding governments and companies accountable for climate damage.
