The Pertame Language School (also known as Pertame Ngketya Untya) is a community-led language revival program empowering Pertame Elders to pass their critically endangered language and cultural knowledge to the next generation. Their mission is to raise Pertame children immersed in their language, culture and ancestral knowledge systems, supported by a strong, connected community.
This grant supported the Pertame Language School to take further steps towards long-term language continuity and the creation of a future Pertame immersion school. The funding helped develop an early childhood immersion curriculum, strengthen decisions around the Pertame writing system, and create new ways for children to learn language through Country, including a bush foods garden. The work continued to bring Elders, parents and young children together around a shared goal of raising the next generation in Pertame language and culture.
This grant supported the Pertame Language School to deepen its language immersion program and build the skills of the next generation of speakers and educators. The work expanded regular Language Nest sessions for young children, supported parent educators through intensive language learning, and developed new curriculum resources to help adult learners progress towards conversational fluency. Elders continued to guide the program, ensuring language teaching remained grounded in Pertame knowledge and culture.
This grant supported the Pertame Language School to strengthen community-led language revival and create more opportunities for young children to learn Pertame from fluent Elders. The funding helped deliver immersive language sessions through songs, stories, games and cultural activities, while supporting parents and carers to build their own fluency so Pertame could be spoken more often at home and passed on to the next generation.
