Protection & Justice for Timor Sea is a First Nations-led initiative working to protect the Timor Sea from offshore gas expansion and industrialisation. Led by Antonia Burke, a First Nations woman with ancestral ties to coastal Country in the Northern Territory, the campaign aims to safeguard the sea, culture and livelihoods of Tiwi Islanders and all coastal communities that depend on the Timor Sea.
This grant supported Protection & Justice for Timor Sea to strengthen a First Nations-led campaign against offshore gas expansion across the Timor Sea region. The work brought together saltwater communities from Australia, Timor-Leste, West Timor and Indonesia, supported advocacy for stronger protection of offshore cultural heritage, and helped coordinate political, legal, financial and communications strategies. It also backed relationship-building across the broader climate and anti-gas movement, with First Nations law, culture and leadership at the centre.
