Lee Point in Darwin is a sacred area of Larrakia Dreaming, ceremony and history that is currently under threat of being destroyed to build 800 houses for the military and privatisation of Aboriginal land.
This grant supported three young Larrakia women – Laniyuk, Cyan Sue-Lee and Sharna Nakata – to build public and political support for returning Lee Point to Larrakia care and protection. The campaign combined storytelling, art, community organising and direct advocacy, reaching hundreds of thousands of people, gathering more than 17,000 petition signatures and mobilising supporters to contact decision-makers and make submissions. The work also supported frontline action and advocacy for a Larrakia-owned future for Lee Point, keeping cultural protection, land rights and community leadership at the centre.
