Saltwater People is a collective of saltwater Traditional Custodians from across the country, working in solidarity to protect Sea Country from offshore fossil fuel projects. Operating under Friends of the Earth Australia, the alliance provides centralised support, cultural strength and strategic coordination for First Nations communities fighting industrialisation of their traditional waters.
This grant supported Saltwater People to strengthen a national network of saltwater Traditional Custodians protecting Sea Country from offshore fossil fuel development. The project brought communities together to share strategy, cultural knowledge and ceremony, while also building practical support around legal literacy, consultation processes, media and campaigning. It helped strengthen connections between impacted Nations, reduce the burden on Traditional Owners navigating repeated industry consultations, and build a more coordinated First Nations-led response to threats facing Sea Country.
