The Seisia Beach Clean x KKY Language Rejuvenation Project is a community-led initiative in Seisia that combines environmental care with language and cultural revival. The project engages young people, families and volunteers in regular beach clean-ups, while providing opportunities to learn Kalaw Kawa Ya language and cultural knowledge from Elders and language speakers.
This grant supported the Seisia Beach Clean x KKY Language Rejuvenation Project to care for Sea Country while strengthening Kalaw Kawa Ya language and cultural knowledge. The project brought Elders, young people, families and community partners together for a two-day beach clean that removed 500kg of marine debris, alongside language, weaving and storytelling activities. It also paid Elders for their cultural leadership and recorded stories for broadcast across the Torres Strait, creating stronger links between environmental care, intergenerational learning and cultural revival.
