Resources, Climate and Australia’s future with Professor Judith Brett

Join Emeritus Professor of politics Judith Brett and Groundswell co-founder Anna Rose in conversation to gain a deeper understanding of the politics of climate change in Australia.

Judith Brett’s exceptional Quarterly Essay from June 2020 traces the unusual history of Australia’s economy and the “resource curse” that has shaped our politics. Join us to learn how the mining industry began to actively block action on climate, the role it played in eroding First Nations land rights, and how the Coalition became dominated by fossil-fuel interests to the exclusion of other voices. We will also explore issues raised in Anna Rose's correspondence piece in the subsequent Quarterly Essay exploring pathways to overcome blockers and make meaningful progress on climate.

Proudly presented by Groundswell Giving and the Australian Environmental Grantmakers Network.

Food, Farming and Climate

Australia’s farmers and food production systems are at the forefront of climate and environmental crises.

From on-farm renewable energy, to the implementation of Indigenous knowledge systems, to protecting and restoring vegetation and soils, there’s a transformation happening in Australian agriculture to tackle and overcome these challenges.

Hear from a panel of five farmers from across the country, as well as your host Maree Lowes, to discuss these big issues!

Briefing with Greg Mullins + Emergency Leaders for Climate Action

In January, our inaugural Groundswell grant of $50,000 was given to Emergency Leaders for Climate Action in response to the summer’s devastating bushfires. We saw the critical role this new group could play in joining the dots in the public conversation between climate change, extreme weather and fossil fuel pollution.

Tune in to hear from Greg about their momentous work this year, made possible by our grant. This includes ELCA’s 2020 National Bushfire and Climate Summit and release of the Australian Bushfire and Climate Plan.

In conversation: Indigenous Fire and Land Management, curated by Lille Madden, with Oliver Costello, Co-founder of Firesticks Alliance, and leading contemporary artist and researcher Jonathan Jones. Such an inspiring evening, we hope you will watch, share, and keep the conversation going in your own worlds!

Climate Change is a Health Emergency

The recent heatwaves, bushfires, and smoke pollution have meant, for many Australians, the health impacts of climate change have become very personal. As an infectious disease, COVID-19 is yet another example of the kind of health threats that climate change will make worse.

Join us for a series of lightning talks from expert health professionals in this special webinar chaired by Groundswell small grant recipients Climate and Health Alliance, to learn about the far reaching impacts of climate change on public health, and the unique opportunity for the health sector to become powerful agents of change for climate action.

Nature laws that work

Our national environmental laws are stuffed. Australia ranks world number 1 for mammal extinction, and world number 2 for biodiversity loss.

But right now, these laws are going through a once in a decade review, and they are taking submissions from the public on how to fix them - aka asking you and me for our experiences and ideas!

Listen in to Suzanne Milthorpe from The Wilderness Society to hear why we need stronger environment laws and what we can do to change them!

Coral bleaching + climate change 101

Amidst the Coronavirus, the Great Barrier Reef has undergone its third mass coral bleaching event in 5 years.

Some 25% of the reefs were severely bleached – meaning that more than 60% of the corals on each reef had bleached. The Great Barrier Reef has experienced five mass bleaching events – 1998, 2002, 2016, 2017 and 2020 – all caused by rising ocean temperatures driven by global heating.

Groundswell caught up with Shani Tager from the Australian Marine Conservation Society to find out the 101 about coral bleaching, climate change, and what we can do to fix it.

‘Actions to support the resilience of the Reef are now more important than ever. Climate change remains the single greatest challenge to the reef.’
